Process Nerd Podcast Ep 1 is LIVE on YouTube
Hey there!
I’ve been playing around with a few ideas on content. One of those has been a podcast.
I want to be able to share with analysts, consultants, and people responsible for continuous improvement how to get great results on their improvement ideas. One of those is how a process model comes together, and the core information that is used to form up requirements for change.
I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think!
If you can’t watch right now, that’s cool! Here’s a brief summary on what I cover:
Choose the Right Modeling Method If you need detailed, structured workflows, use BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). If you prefer a simple, easy-to-understand approach, use UPN (Universal Process Notation).
Pick a Process to Model - Start with a core business function like hiring, customer service, or onboarding. Identify pain points where errors or miscommunication occur.
Use BPMN Elements Correctly Define a Start Event (e.g., “New Role Required” in hiring). Break the process into Tasks (e.g., “Create Job Description,” “Review Applications”). Add Gateways for decision points (e.g., “Candidate Approved? Yes/No”). Always include an End Event to indicate process completion. Use Pools and Lanes to clarify team responsibilities.
Simplify with UPN if Needed - If BPMN feels too complex, use only two shapes (a process box and a connector). Ensure each step clearly states what happens and who does it. Keep it straightforward—ideal for smaller teams and quick documentation.
Define Roles with RACI for Accountability Label each step with:
Responsible – The person doing the task (e.g., HR writes job descriptions).
Accountable – The owner of the outcome (e.g., Hiring Manager ensures success).
Consulted – People who give input (e.g., Team Leads review job descriptions).
Informed – People who just need updates (e.g., Executives).
Put It Into Action - Create a visual map of the process using BPMN or UPN. Ensure all stakeholders understand the workflow. Look for bottlenecks and improve inefficiencies before finalizing.
Refine and Standardize for Scalability - Document the process so it’s repeatable and consistent. Regularly review workflows to adapt to business changes. Train employees on the process to ensure smooth execution.
